    Looe Festival by

the Sea 2006

Holiday Cottages Looe is delighted to announce it’s support for the Looe Festival by the Sea which will be held on Saturday June 3rd and Sunday June 4th 2006.

Historic Looe has been a centre for fishing and seafaring for centuries and is located just 20 miles west of Plymouth with it’s mainline train station, airport and superb road connections, and with it’s own railway station, travel to Looe easy and convenient.

Holiday Cottages Looe has a fine and ever growing choice of quality self-catering cottages, many of which have already agreed to support the event by offering long-weekend break packages so that you can enjoy the fun for the whole weekend, arriving on Friday and leaving on Monday. Since Looe is such a fantastic place to base yourself for a wonderful week in Cornwall, you can of course decide to stay for a whole week. You won’t regret it and whatever your interests, there is so much to do in Looe and the surrounding area that you are sure to have a great time.

This is the 4th biennial Looe Festival by the Sea and the weekend is sure to be fun packed, with lots of entertaining events that are being organised by local groups. If you are interested in photography, music, choirs, bands, dance or drama to name but a few of the attractions and events that will take place in June, then this is a weekend not to be missed.

The primary focus of the Looe Festival by the Sea is to celebrate Looe’s centuries old fishing industry which stills thrives today with numerous day boat fishermen landing their catch at the local Looe fish market. Looe fish is much heralded for it’s freshness and quality and has been praised by non other than the world famous Rick Stein.

With a daily supply of fresh local fish, you can sample these delights all year round at the many quality restaurants and pubs in Looe and during the festival, the local restaurants will all be offering some very special gastronomic delights – not to be missed.  In Looe that weekend, you may even be able to get a free lunch as there will be food tastings on the quayside !

There are many events on offer that celebrate Looe’s fishing industry, it’s history  and the sea. Local fisherman will be providing tours of their boats and trawlers, there will be talks on the challenge of catching the fish and also demonstrations of fish filleting and processing at the Looe fish market.

Looe has a RNLI lifeboat station and there will be displays in the lifeboat house (just by Banjo Pier), a helicopter rescue and a maritime band. Anglian Princess, a coastguard vessel, will be moored in Looe Bay and hopefully there will be visits to the bay from Royal Navy vessels from the nearby Devonport Naval base.

Looe bay will also be alive with smaller craft. There is the “all comers” around the island race and gig racing in Cornish Pilot Gigs.  They were originally used to take Pilots out to vessels coming off the Atlantic, first crew there got the job. They are now raced around the west country for pleasure and are quite an impressive sight.

The Looe Festival By The Sea also includes displays by the RNLI, incorporating a spectacular helicopter rescue, a chance to sea the lifeboat crew in action live!

Music and drama groups will be performing throughout the weekend. The West Looe wine tent will be hosting bands and musicians, whilst at various locations drama and dancing groups will also be performing, including a re-enactment of a gallows hanging!!

And of course there will be the ever popular Pirates and Buccaneers, reminding us of Looe’s shady past supplying the high sea’s with some of the most notorious pirates in history.

A daily listing of events will be available from our website as soon as they are finalised and published, so please come back to find out exactly What’s On  and when.
